We left the ship in the late afternoon to visit the three georges dam.
The Three Georges Dam spans the Yangtze River near the city Yichang in Hubei Province, which is east of Chongqing.
The Dam was already envisioned in 1919, finally approved in 1992.
It’s not only producing electricity, but also increases the Yangtze River’s shipping capacity and reduces the potential for floods.
However, building the dam flooded many areas, even archaeological and cultural sites. About 1.3 million people lost there home and had to be displaced. In addition it has caused significant ecological changes and can even slow down the earths rotation!
We were traveling with on organized tour, that took us by bus from the docs to the entrance of the sightseeing area of the dam. The entrance was very well organized, while we went through a security control our bus did too and afterwards our bus took us to the first sightseeing spot. The whole park is huge since there is four dams. But for those who travel by themselves there is also golf car shuttle busses (I don’t know what they are called)…
First we went on a hill that has a great overview on the dams, unfortunately the weather wasn’t that great, but in Chongqing it never is.
Afterwards we also got a closer look at the dams.
At the end we went to see a temple and from it the biggest dam like a line at the horizon.
